Connecting to FTP Server (with Login) on Ubuntu

Ubuntu is always equipped with all great resources when we need to get any task done with an ease, doesn't matter whether it is on local machine or online. Here I am posting steps for connecting to a FTP server on your Ubuntu system.

First of all go to 'Places' and click on 'Connect to Server...' (see image below):

Now you will get the 'Connect to Server' dialog box on your screen (see image below):

Here you have choose your service type to 'FTP (with Login)' and just fill up two important information in this box, first one is your FTP server host name and second one is your FTP server user name (see images below).

Now click the 'Connect' button (make sure you are connected to internet).

In the next step you will get a dialog box to enter your FTP server password with three options (see image below), choose any one of them as per your need and again click on 'Connect' button.

Wait! Its not done here. Some of you may get here an error message (see image below) and those who don't are ready to play with their files from server in the 'File Browser' of their ubuntu system.

And for those who got the above error, there is nothing to worry about, just open your internet browser (in my case it is firefox) and keep it minimized, then click on the 'Ok' button of 'Error' dialog box and go to your file browser and check the navigation panel at the left side of your file browser, your FTP server is ready there, just click on it and at the right panel you will find all your folders and files from your server ready to play with.

To find which Ubuntu version you are using:
Open the command terminal and type;

To find which kernel you are using:

To kill (end) a process:
There are many tricks to try to fix a frozen PC. Press Alt+F2, and use killall to end the frozen application.

Example:
To kill firefox;

killall firefox

To refresh gnome-panel;

killall gnome-panel

To refresh desktop;

killall nautilus

Another trick to try is pressing AltGr+SysRq+K (RightAlt+PrintScreen+K). This will log you out. But, what happens if this does not work? Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1,login, enter your password and run;

sudo killall gdm
sudo startx

To view hidden file:
In the Nautilus file manager, press;

Permissions error on program startup:
If you get a permissions error, try the following;

sudo chown -R user /home/user

Note: Replace user with the actual username. This command changes the owner of the folder /home/user to user. -R means "recursively", i.e. including all subfolders.

CD-ROM Troubleshooting:

If you receive the "cdrecord has no permission to open the device" error while burning using a CD burner, open a terminal and type:

sudo chmod 777 /dev/scd0

Note: replace "/dev/scd0" with your own device. chmod 777 is the universal option for granting full permission to a folder. The 777 mask indicates that read, write, and execute permission is given to all users.

To mount shared folder on Ubuntu Guest in VirtualBox

To mount a shared folder on Ubuntu Guest machine in VirtualBox first of all share that particular folder through VirtualBox settings. Then start your guest machine. After that start terminal (Application>Accesories>Terminal) and type following commands:

$ sudo mkdir sharedfolder
$ sudo mount.vboxsf sharedfolder ~/sharedfolder

Here replace the sharedfolder in bold with the folder name that you have to mount.
Now, check it in your home directory in file browser, your folder is mounted. Isn't it so simple.

Bug Fixed : Xorg.conf for Intel 845

In one of my recent post I mentioned about the disappointing behaviour of intel 845 chipset driver configuration in ubuntu. But now I finally got it solved and here I am posting the steps to follow to get it working properly and perfectly. You can see the long list of options in my ubuntu intrepid system in screenshot above.

Follow these steps:
1. Check which kernel release you are using, in may case it is 2.6.27-11 generic, I would suggest you to upgrade to it, if it is not. (I am using intrepid)

2. Install Intel driver if it is not installed in you system, you can do it through Synaptic Package Manager.

3. Now edit your x-org.conf file

$ gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Find the "Devices" section and put the following inputs exactly:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Option  "AccelMethod"   "uxa"
Option  "EXAOptimizeMigration"  "true"
Option  "MigrationHeuristic"  "greedy"
Option  "Tiling"   "false"
EndSection

Save the file.

4. Now run the following command:

$ lspci -v

Within the result of the above code find the section begining with "VGA Compatible Controller" and look for the "Memory at....prefetchable" section.

Here, you need to change the size from MB notation to hexadecimal notation, follow the table below for your ready reference:

512MB = 0x20000000
256MB = 0x10000000
128MB = 0x08000000
64MB  = 0x04000000
32MB  = 0x02000000
16MB  = 0x01000000

In my case, the base memory (memory address) is 0xe0000000 and the size is 0x08000000.

5. Now, create a new file called fixmtrr.sh

$ gksudo gedit /usr/local/bin/fixmtrr.sh

Paste following script:

echo "base=your base momory size=your memory size type=write-combining" > /proc/mtrr

cat /proc/mtrr

Before saving, edit the parts in bold to reflect the memory address and size you discovered in the last step.
Example, In my case it is:

echo "base=0xe0000000 size=0x08000000 type=write-combining" > /proc/mtrr

Save the file.

Finally make this script executable:

$ sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/fixmtrr.sh

6. Now, just reboot you machine and run the "fixmtrr.sh" script:

$ sudo fixmtrr.sh

7. Now, once again reboot your machine and see the difference.

I thank a lot to psyke83 from ubuntuforums.org for his great work out to solve this big bug, but his steps as a whole didn't work for me so I did a little bit changes to his steps here and finally it was done for me and I hope same for those who need to have it done. Best of luck to you all.

At the end, if these steps doesn't work for you, you can get back to your default configuration with following command:

How to Fix Sysnaptic Package Manager in Ubuntu Intrepid

Suppose you are trying to install a package, say deborphan, through Synaptic Package Manager and when you type the same in the search box, results shown nothing.....hmmm.....not to worry, just go the Applications>Accessories>Terminal and type this command:

sudo update-apt-xapian-index

Now, you give a try again. I know its working now!
